Lego

By Sam Davies
July 2003, south east Wales
A digital story from Capture Wales

Loopy about Lego

Sam Davies is 14. He has one childhood pastime that he's always able to return to - Lego!

"Lots of people have Lego in a cupboard. I have Lego with a cupboard around it! My collection started with a few pieces in the corner and, as I grew, so did my Lego collection. With every Christmas and birthday came my mother exclaiming the Lego was the perfect gift with cries of "when you get bored, you can take it apart and rebuild it."

So my Lego went from the small collection to some small boxes to the tumbling waterfall of plastic and eventually the all-consuming blob it's now become.

As I've grown older, I've played with different toys but the Lego has always been there - familiar but always different as my fickle tastes change. But, as my Mum says every Christmas...

My Lego hasn't been used for a while, forsaken for glitzy video games. But Lego isn't tainted by such emotions as jealously and is waiting to welcome me back with open arms. To burst forth and reclaim my bedroom. To once again obscure my floor from view. And then I will retire. Back to my lair for hours on end. Searching for the hardest piece to find: the last one.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder!"

What's your story about?
How my Lego collection has grown and grown until it's reached the point where it can now cover the floor up to a depth of one inch.

Why did you choose to tell this particular story?
Because, although Lego is not a big part of my life, it's a big part of my story!

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
Learning how to use Adobe Premiere.

This was a school workshop run in collaboration with .

Your comments

"I real like your video it reminds me of myself. When I was smaller I loved playing with Lego, that's all my brother and I did. Except my mother wasn't real that encouraging about us playing with it, well it wasn't like she was telling us not to play with it she just would tell my brother and I a lot that if we didn't pick it up she would get rid of it."
