Khaled Al-Raqqad: My Life with Signs and Regulations

My Life with Signs and Regulations

By Khaled Al-Raqqad
September 2007, Cardiff
A digital story from Digital Storytelling

Khaled is a chief editor with Jordan Radio and Television.

This is one of a collection of Digital Stories made by international journalists studying with the in Cardiff on a special course during the summer of 2007.

"I'm from Jordan and I'm happy to be here in Wales studying. I have found that here in Cardiff I spend a lot of time reading regulations and signs. And this makes me late reaching my destinations.

Sometimes these signs lead to a deadlock. Actually I feel I'm not free. I'm just like a bird in a cage. I can't move freely. When I cross the road I also feel I'm being watched even though I'm not violating any rules. These signs restrict my freedom and my routine.

Once a guard watching a security camera saw my friends and I smoking a shisha. He came and sent us out to smoke by the river. After this happened I have an obsession with following rules. So even when pretty girl smiles at me, I can't do anything because - all the way from Jordan - my wife sends me emails with her rules and regulations too."
