"Keeping up was always a struggle until I discovered technology."

"I'm 25 and probably don't have as much to talk about with regards to my life as some people. From a young age I was a timid child with learning difficulties so keeping up was always a struggle, until I discovered technology. This opened up doors for me and led me into a world that I understood and it enabled me to help other people, instead of them helping me all the time.
Technology, digital, computers, internet, games consoles - they all interest me. I lived in a small village called Trefor, which is by the Pontcysylltau aquaduct, a famous landmark within Wales. Here lies your traditional Welsh village where you know everybody by their first name.
In school, computer-based courses were my favourite. It allowed me to flourish academically and gradually build up my confidence. This thing called technology has opened up opportunities for me within my village, allowed me to pass on and receive messages from other people - not only in Wales but around the world; shop online, bargain hunt and even bank.
I have picked up new skills, not only technological ones but a niche where I am able to help people and myself develop and keep up with the times.
Without technology, what would I have done with my life? When I look to the future and when I get older I wonder what new products and technology will come out and what will they allow me to do. But I will always remember that I control the technology. I won't let it control me."
An interview with the author
Could you tell us something about yourself?
I work for Wrexham County Borough Council as an Administrative Officer on a regeneration project in Plas Madoc and Cefn Mawr. I have a very interesting job doing a wide variety of tasks working with many different people, one day is never the same as the next.
Did you have any reservations about telling your story?
If I had been asked about four years ago if I would want to tell a story about myself then I would have said no (due to lack of confidence). The story was a way of saying that I recognise the fact that I was very low in confidence in my early life, but day to day challenges (education, work, maturity) have allowed me to grow as a person and enabled me to produce a piece about me.
What's the story about?
The way I wanted to tell the story is that as a child I felt that I was nothing, and then I discovered things that interest me such as computers. Ultimately they formed the basis for my education and career and at the same time, this developed me as a person and helped my confidence grow.
How did you find the workshop?
The digital storytelling team were really friendly and knowledgeable and were able to advise me if I ever did encounter a problem. The computer equipment was great and gave me hands on experience of Adobe Premiere and Photoshop. The group of people telling their stories at the same time as me were great and we all gelled as one happy family straight away.
A good experience then?
An excellent experience! At the end of the workshops I went away buzzing knowing that I had achieved something so great in such a short time. I know that everybody out there has a story to tell and through digital storytelling this is your chance to tell it!!
