Snow

Advice on what to do when the weather turns bad, and things to know in case of emergencies. Links to our local webcams, weather reports, travel and possible school closures.

When temperatures fall to sub-zero, the number of deaths from heart attacks peaks three days later, from strokes five days later and from respiratory infections ten days later.

You should always check on vulnerable neighbours when听the weather takes a turn for the worse if it's safe for you to do so.

How will I know bad weather is on its way?

Check the weather reports on the left hand side of this page (or the link below), we'll keep you up to date if we know bad weather is on its way.

How do I prepare my home if I'm going to be snowed in?

Aside from winter weather checks, which you should make in advance of bad weather, you will need to:

  • keep candles, matches or a lighter at hand incase of a power cut.
  • buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment.
  • store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location.
  • prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

What if I have to go out into the snow?

If you go outside wear several layers of clothing and keep dry to prevent loss of body heat.

Watch out for signs of hypothermia:

  • uncontrollable shivering
  • slow/slurred speech
  • memory lapse and drowsiness and frostbite
  • loss of feeling in and pale appearance of fingers, toes, nose and ear lobes

Keep moving your arms and legs to help the blood circulate.

What if I need to travel in the snow?

If you have to make a journey when snow is forecast, make sure you have warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and spade, and let someone know when you expect to arrive and your route. Try to wait until the roads have been gritted before travelling.

If you must drive check the Highway Code for advice on driving in ice and snowy weather. A link to their website can be found on the left hand side of this page.

What can I do to lessen the impact of the snow?

You can use grit or cat litter on paths and driveways to lessen the risk of slipping on compacted snow.

Take care when shovelling snow. Cold air makes it harder to work and breathe, which adds some extra strain on the body and can be the cause of heart attacks in the vulnerable.

How will I know if my child's school is closed?

91热爆 Tees will have a list of the schools that have let us know they're closed when bad weather strikes. The page can be found at the left of this page or on the link below, but in snowy conditions will be on the front page of this website.

If you don't have to go out enjoy the snow from home

Hopefully you won't need to make a journey in the snow and you can instead enjoy the pictures of it falling from the comfort of your own home.听 Take a look at our webcams across the area and galleries of winter wonderland photos submitted by 91热爆 Tees users this winter.

Information gathered from The Met Office and The Environment Agency.
