Tiger Moth aircraft

(c) Peter Treweek

Wooden wonder

Egton's Peter Jackson is a proud owner of one of the RAF's most iconic aircraft - The deHavilland Tiger Moth.

With it's bright yellow livery and archaic looks, the deHavilland Tiger Moth is a blast from the past as it almost flutters its way through the skies over the Esk Valley.

Egton's Peter Jackson has enjoyed a life-long love affair with the aircraft, and finally got his hands on a real Tiger nearly 30 years ago.

"I fell in love with them as a boy. I've always wanted a Tiger Moth and wasn't able to fulfil my ambition until about 1980. It's done about a thousand miles with myself.

"I got my licence with an old Sergeant pilot who used to fly Halifaxes - Les Povey. I did a bit of flying before that but I did a bit of gliding during National Service."

For Peter, flying such a machine is very much a labour of love. It's not easy!

"It's very different to a modern aeroplane. It swings on take-off and bounces on landing so it's a bit tricky!

"They are slower of course!

Old, vintage, retro...

"I'm into wheels, wheels and wings, old bikes, old cars and old aeroplanes.

"Modern stuff doesn't turn me on, as they say today."

He still gets his fix of the modern aircraft with the RAF.

"We did as swap at RAF Scampton - we swapped flights in the Tiger for flights in the Tucano - bit like a modern Spitfire.

"Not a piston though - it must have been a thrill in a Spitfire with all that torque pulling."

Dream flight?

As far as Peter is concerned there's just the one plane for him.

"It has to be the Mosquito. Imagine two Merlins thundering away. The Mosquito is the ultimate."
