Station Road

It was a very hot day...evidently

SIRF Friday

The second day of the Stockton Riverside Festival keeps up the high standard...

Friday’s action kicked off with a change to the advertised bill, as Femme Fetale filled in for the absent King Phillip. Fronted by the suberbly glammed-up Emma on guitar and Bren on bass, their adventures in Kenicke-esque rock’n’roll are a delight to behold.

Dedicating the set to their soon to be former drummer Matt, tunes such as the ‘The Woooaaah Song’, their very own rock opera ‘Judas Kiss’ and summer ska ensemble ‘Seize the Day’ made sure the crowd were adequately warmed up…

Meanwhile, ‘Dirty Weekend’ try hard to encompass every classic British band from the last 20 years into their sound (think a mixture of the Beatles, the Stone Roses, Oasis, Hard-Fi and Kasabian and you’re about there), but somehow manage to lose their own identity along the way.

Sporting tunes with now clichéd subjects such as ASBO’s (‘Hooligan’), drugs (‘Diamond Dust’) and Friday night fights outside pubs, their set doesn’t bring anything new, despite brothers Danny and Mike trying to become Stockton’s answer to the brothers Gallagher…

Following how on their heels are Station Road, who receive the award for the most impressive hair of the day, looking like Towers of London after they’d just been caught up in an explosion at a Wella factory.

A strict diet of tight jeans, Converse and Guns ’n’ Roses have seen this lot morph into Teesside’s very own Motley Crue, and with the tunes to match the attitude, soon it’ll be more than their hair that people will be talking about…

The Wax Jackets brought the funk to the day, and despite having a few Simply Red moments with ‘Some Kind of Blue’ and ‘Rough With The Smooth’, their jazz lounge specialities oozed sax appeal (I’m so sorry), pleasing the punters who had come to sample a somewhat calmer tune….

However, it’s soon to be superstars ‘ThisBand’ that are easily the best group of the day with their perfect surf-pop melodies.

Having already previously heard their arsenal full of ridiculously catchy pop hooks, their live performance oozes charisma and look like they’re genuinely having a ball.

‘Thought You’d Try’ sounds like Weezer and Ash partying on their prom night, while ‘This Band is Better Than Your Band’ means what it says and proves that no-one comes close to them today.Ìý
