Do you have any memories or stories of the Stoke area?

My grandparents lived in bath street I was born there, my great grandmother lived in Gower St. I remember lots of things about stoke..street parties.. horse deliveries..playing by the river, swimming at stoke bathing pool, my uncle rowed for stoke from the bottom 0f bath st. I was also in the 1953 floods, my grandmother lost her living when her house in bath st was flooded, she was a tailores all her materials and sowing machines were lost as well as everything else. some months later my grandfather was sweeping the chimney and down came my slippers which the flood waters had pushed up the chimney!! they eventually moved to a new house in maidenhall appraoch.my uncle Keith worked on the railway as a guard until he retired...we have many many happy memories of "Over Stoke"

my nana & Grandad lived on Vernon Street, across ffom the Old Bell. They also lived on Whip Street. We used to play back where the maltings were. There used to be a world war11 bunker back there. Those were the days, we would play outside all day (this is in the 60"s when we were little. Going to Nanna & Grandads house was an adventure.

I have traced my family tree back to the 1790s andRainbirds Mill was by Stoke Bridge.

My Aunt and Uncle lived in Wherstead Road and kept a dinghy at the bottom of the garden, Uncle Charlie was a boatbuilder.My cousin - Diana - used to row about the Orwell in the dinghy, My Grandad was a sailmaker and made sails for barges and racing yachts of the day.He even made his own "lino" from barge sail canvas which was treated with (?) ochre and varnish.

My grandparents lived in Hawes St. Many of the family worked at R and Rs.(3 generations)When visiting we always walked through the docks and over Stoke Bridge where the Thames barges filled the docks.I can recall in 1930s going on hloiday by paddle steamer from New Cut to Walton-on-the Naze via Felixstowe dock(a wooden jetty!)The steamer went on to Clacton. My father learned to swim at the Stoke bathing place and attended St.Mary's Stoke primary school.At the age of five I was bridesmaid at an Uncle's wedding at St.Mary's (1934)
