With the help of local experts including Suffolk Wildlife Trust, our Springwatch Action Team will head to Oakes Road Recreation Ground in October (so it's more of an Autumnwatch event).

The inhabitants of Oakes Road already benefit from the richness that oak woodland offers, but with some bio-diversity and wildlife management this could be brought forward and enjoyed by the community.

About Oakes Road

Oakes Road is a public open space on the north side of Bury St Edmunds owned by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

There is a formal area with a football pitch and children's play equipment. Adjacent to this is 10 acres of wild young oak woodland which was planted about 30 years ago.

The view from above

The woodland acts as a green space for the large and sprawling Howard Estate which borders it to the north and east.

To the south is the A14 and to the west a golf course and open country. It is a haven for wildlife, children and dog walkers, but with just a little work it could be transformed for many more people from the local community to enjoy.

SWAT plan of action

The Swat team and volunteers will aim to:

• Improve access into the woodland to allow more people to enjoy the space;
• Organise a litter pick and general clean up of the area - plastic bottles collected will be recycled and used to help produce seating for the community in the woodland;
• Create signage to identify wildlife habitats within the woodland

An audit by Suffolk Wildlife Trust will be undertaken to identify what wildlife habitats are already in place and what improvements may be carried out to attract more to the woodland.

Experts from Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) will head an enthusiastic group of volunteers.
