Made In EnglandYou are in: Suffolk > Made In England > A wave of inspiration A wave of inspirationBy Guy Campbell We've already got the controversial scallop sculpture at Aldeburgh beach, and now it has some competiton, in the shape of three, twenty-feet high sculptures of waves at Dunwich Heath. The sculptures are collectively called Storm Surge and each is shaped like a giant wave at different stages in its evolution.
Help playing audio/video The team work on the Storm Surge sculpture The three towering greenwood structures took three weeks to make and have been constructed by artists from Red Earth. They're made from locally sourced sustainable materials such as birch, heather and reeds. Sculptures along the coast have a habit of arousing strong feelings and can even become a target for graffiti artists, but love it or hate it, the 'Scallop' at Aldeburgh has been a big talking point for visitors, and the National Trust hopes these sculptures will raise awareness of the plight of the coastline here at Dunwich. Local Warden Jessica Woodgate says, "they look absolutely fantastic and blend in really well with the beautiful landscape, one will have some heather put on it and another will be covered with local reeds." Jessica Woodgate "They are not permanent sculptures and will come down in September so we hope people won't be offended by them," said Jessica. "We want them to be enjoyed and to prompt discussions about the changing coastline, we want to highlight the rapid environmental transformations that are predicted to take place in the next fifty years.'' This year is the 'International Year of the Planet' and organisers say they want these sculptures to help mark the event. The National Trust is working with environmental arts company Red Earth on the new project .
Help playing audio/video The sculptures are the first part of a major project called "Long Shore Drift" which aims to draw together past, present and future landscapes, illuminating the natural forces at work along the fragile Suffolk coastline. last updated: 21/04/2008 at 11:20 Have Your SayWhat are your views on the new sculpture?
