Brokeback Mountain

Review: Brokeback Mountain

Firstly, having read the book, all 50 pages of it, it makes you wonder how something so short could be turned into a Golden Globe winning film.

Secondly and more importantly how would the intensity of the book be transferred to the silver screen.

Brokeback Mountain has been directed by Ang Lee, probably best known for the commercial Hulk, and the less commercial Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, a Director who鈥檚 skill Hulk aside, appears to be to turn stories into immense cinematic experiences.

For those that haven鈥檛 seen the film it is worthwhile saying that it is much more than just a 鈥済ay cowboy film鈥 as the press would have us believe.听 This is a story of heart wrenching emotion, the film is set in Wyoming and Ang Lee has managed to wring every last ounce of beauty out of the landscape, this alone is worth seeing.

The story is a very simple love story, set initially in the early sixties, its about two cowboys who meet whilst working, fall in love, both get married and have children. If only it was that simple, the story spans a period of 25 years, it is a tortuous, claustrophobic and highly charged story of two people who live in a time and place where their love for each other can only exist hidden from public sight.

"This film is beautiful, achingly beautiful."

Tony Felgate

As you would expect nothing is ever straight forward, at the end of the film you feel physically exhausted as everybody鈥檚 lives seem to gradually unravel.听 It is a credit to Ang Lee that such depth has been transferred to film from a short book but credit must be given to the actors, each actor manages to play the characters in a way that makes them truly believable.听

Both Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are exceptional leads; Heath Ledger deserves the Oscar for his portrayal of Ennis, the drawling accent and the slightly slovenly posture, Gyllenhaal for his powerful portrayal of a man who believes, despite what everyone thinks, that they should have a future together.听 Supporting roles from Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams as the wives are equally powerful, these roles being expanded beyond that of the original story.

At the end of the day this is a good old-fashioned love story, a film that would not have been made at any other time.听 This film is beautiful, achingly beautiful.听 Ang Lee has made a masterpiece and I for one feel all the better for seeing it.听 Every other review I have seen has given it a five out of five rating, believe the hype this film truly deserves it.听听听

'gay cowboy movie' puts many people off watching this film, namely straight men. But it a serious film, with a serious moving plot. People should get past the gay barrier and watch this movie because it is eye opening and emotional. touches me more than any straight love stroy ever could.

Brokeback mountain, i must have seen it like about 15 times and everytime i see it i tell God how talented they have made the actors. So the first time it was 'coz its a gay theme movie, but as i watched it a couple of times i realised that tears refused to stay in my eyes and rolled down coz the scenes were so touching.A movie that turned my life big time coz now i know that love happens and stays and i am so proud that i love a guy, which is pretty hard in a country that i am in.xxx to the movie maker

To label the movie as a 'gay cowboy movie' simply means one looked at the posters and failed to listen or experience the movie. As previously stated, this is a story of two people...people...who fell inlove at a time that their love was forbidden. They did not choose to fall inlove, have a huge desire to be together, or hide what they felt for each other. They were living in a world that dictated whom you could love, what life you should live, the 'proper' steps each person to take to fit in, etc. And when some cannot deal with that love, they destroy enough of the situation or part of it so that it will cease to exist and no longer threaten them. I feel the characters here could have been a black and white couple, a Christian and Muslim couple, etc. For some of us who are a bit older, it reminds us what life was like at one time when you were forbidden to love whom you wanted. And for some, sadly, this reminds them of where they are today...hiding...and never seeing the end of a dark tunnel.

This movie is very soul touching. Gay love is not an easy topic but I am amazed by how it is turned to motion picture on screen. Best story, best director, best actors and best picture. Really beautiful. After you've seen it, you will realise what true love is and how it's like for gay boys. Out of the world!

This is the best film I have seen in ages. MUCH better than The Constant Gardener. The cinema was packed, even the seats at the front where no one usually wants to sit. The audience ranged from teenagers to elderly couples, so a complete cross-section. The film is two hours long, but I didn't look at my watch once - always a good sign. I completely agree with everything in Tony's review.
