Find out what's happening in Strictly Come Dancing 2009
News
It was gentlemen only this week, as the lads took their turn on the dancefloor. Would they put in performances that put the ladies to shame, and more importantly, win the judges over?
Jumping in first with a Jive were Austin & Erin, dancing to You Can't Stop the Beat from the musical Hairspray. Their high-kicking performance got the show off to a stunning start. "He did it like a master," said Bruno. Even Craig agreed, saying "That was absolutely brilliant." "You have set the standard for Strictly series six" added Arlene.Scores: Craig 8, Arlene 8, Len 9, Bruno 9. Total 34.
Next up were Mark & Hayley, bringing a bit of Latin passion to the dancefloor with a Tango to Tanguera by Sexteto Mayor. The judges felt they'd really improved, but both Len and Craig felt the beginning was a bit "mincey". And Arlene thought that Mark needed more charisma. "You do have the ability to dance" she said, "but Hayley, get this man to an acting coach!"
Scores: Craig 5, Arlene 5, Len 7, Bruno 7. Total 24.
Then Gary & Karen rocked it up with a Jive to Lipstick, Powder and Paint by Shakin' Stevens. After last week's poor score, they were clearly hoping to shake the judges up a bit this time around. Did they succeed? Well - up to a point. "Your footwork - as flat as a pancake" said Arlene, though Len disagreed. "I thought your footwork was very very good." But Bruno and Craig were both with Arlene. "More holes than the surface of the moon," Bruno thought.
Scores: Craig 3, Arlene 4, Len 6, Bruno 5. Total 18.
John & Kristina's stately Tango, to Tony Bennett's Boulevard of Broken Dreams was next. The judges thought it was an unusual take on the Tango, Bruno describing John as like "a jolly godfather after a few pints", though he thought he still made it work. Craig felt John was "far too nice for the dance" and his performance needed more attitude.
Scores: Craig 3, Arlene 6, Len 6, Bruno 7. Total 22.
Following with another, though rather more rocky Tango were Andrew & Ola, dancing to Bang Tango's version of Twentieth Century Boy. One particular move caught the judges' attention. "I've never seen headbanging in a Tango before," commented Arlene. But Andrew's stance, and particularly his bottom, came in for some criticism, even from Len.
Scores: Craig 4, Arlene 6, Len 7, Bruno 5. Total 22.
Tom & Camilla danced a sensuous Jive to Sam Sparro's Black and Gold. But did the judges think their performance deserved the gold? Well, Len certainly did. "You are carrying the flag for the boys," he said. Bruno agreed. "Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed... there's going to be two challengers." Even Craig complimented their "fantastic personality and musicality."
Scores: Craig 7, Arlene 8, Len 9, Bruno 9. Total 33.
Finally, Don & Lilia performed a Tango to Whatever Lola Wants by Gotan Project. Their dramatic performance was certainly what the judges wanted from a Tango. Bruno said he'd been able to "feel the menace, feel the drama". "That was a fantastic routine", agreed Craig, with Arlene describing it as "Masterful."
Scores: Craig 7, Arlene 7, Len 8, Bruno 8. Total 30.
Rounding things off, the ladies took their turn on the ballroom boards for the group performance. They showed off their moves by dancing a Swing to Choo Choo Ch'Boogie, wowing the audience and the judges.
So, Gary, John and Andrew are the lowest rated by the judges, but who do you think should go? Tune in at 8.10pm on Sunday to find out which couple will be leaving this week.
