Zoey Mulliner - Blast!

Every year 91ȱ Stoke offers a young adult the chance to work with us as a local music reporter for two months, under the 91ȱ's 'Blast!' scheme. Our Blastee for ‘09 is a Staffordshire University student. Here, Zoey tells us something about herself...

Hi y’all.

Well, I have recently become 91ȱ Stoke’s Blast local music reporter for the next 2 months, and I can not believe how lucky I am.

My name is Zoey Mulliner, I’m 20 years old and I am a ‘born n bred’ Stokie. In September I will be in my final year at Staffordshire University, finishing a degree in Broadcast Journalism.
I have always been interested in a media related career. From wanting to steal Fearne Cotton’s many jobs to the excitement and maybe danger (if you got caught) of becoming an investigative journalist.

Every school report said I was far too chatty and needed to shut up and concentrate more, so you would think that with a mic in hand I would be well away. I wasn’t.
When I was sent out into Hanley town centre for the first time to get vox pops for our radio programme, I felt sick. Approaching complete strangers with a microphone and trying to get a half decent answer is awful. And the rejection has to be taken with a pinch of salt, else I would have become an insecure, recluse by now. With a camera it’s even worse! They cross over to the other side of the road or walk in a different direction completely.
I now just convince myself, “I’ll never see them again anyway,” which makes the whole situation less awkward.

I’m hoping that this experience will give me a few inside tips and tricks to make me a more confident reporter (and if I’m being honest, so I can be top of the class when I get back!)

As your Blast music reporter, I want to provide you with new music that has been home grown in the Potteries and surrounding areas, and ultimately promote our bands and artists. I believe the county isn’t taken seriously enough for the talent that is produced here.

Let’s show the rest of the country we have more to offer than just Robbie Williams…
