When Ruby was told she’d be getting married, she had to prepare to leave Pakistan to take up a new life in Hertfordshire. From a well-to-do Muslim background, she was taking a big risk on her student husband, but that was the family’s choice for her. It was only once she came to England that she realised he didn’t have residency in the UK. In an unexpected moment of a normal day, police broke into their small rented flat, arrested him and took him away. Ruby had no idea what was happening. He was then deported, leaving Ruby a homeless, single new mother, speaking little English and having to find work. Physical abuse By the time her husband gained residency, Ruby had endured years of struggling to get by. She was now settled. But the idea of her being independent and losing control over his wife made Ruby’s husband turn and their relationship deteriorated.
