Parvathi grew up in India with her mother and grandmother. Her mother had raised Parvathi alone after her father left them. He was never to be seen again. Life was a financial struggle but a relative in England sent them small sums of money, before eventually bringing them over to England to live with him and his wife. In a completely new environment, speaking little English and living under someone else’s rules proved challenging for them. Parvathi’s mother eventually had no say in her life, being forced down a long road of solitude and severe depression. Shunned by society Parvathi’s story is of the struggles she witnessed and experienced, simply because her little family was fatherless. Shunned upon by society as a broken family and having to rely on relatives for shelter and money, they were left entirely helpless and at the mercy of overpowering family. She particularly remembers her arranged marriage – not realising just how ‘arranged’ it would be. Life came as a bit of a shock to a naive and unsuspecting young Parvathi.
