Narinder came to England under different circumstances. Adopted at the age of 3, she lived in Tanzania with a well-off Sikh family, surrounded by servants. A young girl at the hands of these very servants, she was stripped of her childhood. Abuse and bullying After several years of secret abuse, Narinder was sent to boarding school in England. Being the only Asian in the live-in school, and wearing traditional clothes, Narinder became a target of aggressive bullying. Again, something she suffered for several years, leaving her with little self-worth and lacking confidence. But one thing she had learnt to do by now was to put on a brave face. At an older age with more control over her life, Narinder found herself rebelling against all the norms that were expected of her. Her father emotionally tormented her for several years when she announced her plans to marry someone unconventional and to study at a top university for an unusual degree subject. Still building on her confidence now, living in Portsmouth, life is a struggle – a constant battle with herself to believe her self-worth and to speak out.
