Plight of Asian Women - Shobna Shankar's Story

By Anisha Shah
In this series we look at the stories of five Asian women, and the struggle they have been through to find a new life in Britain. Anisha Shah talks to Shobna Shankar about having her daughter taken from her and being cut off from her parents...

Shobna dreamed of a life abroad. Desperate to get out of her native India and prove her worth as an independent Hindu woman, the opportunity to move soon came her way.

When Shobna was introduced to her husband from England, she agreed and was married to him a fortnight later. Then came the big day of the move – although she’d prepared herself, she remembers it being much more emotional than she’d expected.

Waving goodbye to her mother, father, siblings and friends and the only country she had ever known, Shobna had no idea when she’d see them again. In her hand, a small suitcase of clothes and fond photographs. With no money given to her, she couldn’t even buy a drink when thirsty on the long journey to England.

Nevertheless, 28 year old Shobna, who weighed a mere 6 stone when she was married, was excited to be embarking on a new life in England.

Nothing could have prepared her for the torment she would suffer in her new home in Leicestershire.

In her story Shobna Shankar talks about the turmoil of being totally cut off from her friends and family, having her daughter taken from her by her husband's family and getting used to life in England...
