World number one Federer next faces another Frenchman, Paul-Henri Mathieu, after he beat Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4).
The other semi-final pits Juan Martin del Potro against Richard Gasquet.
Del Potro, who won the Erste Bank Open in Vienna last Sunday, battled past big-serving South African Kevin Anderson 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
The second seed from Argentina will play third-seeded Frenchman Gasquet after he overcame Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-2 7-6 (7-5).
