Bristol flanker Ross Rennie has announced his retirement with immediate effect because of injury.

The 28-year-old Scotland international has not played since October and had been seeking specialist advice about a neurological problem.

He moved to Bristol from Edinburgh in January 2014 and made 13 appearances, scoring seven times.

"I feel very privileged to have been a professional rugby player," said Rennie, who has 20 international caps.

"I feel very fortunate that the sport has given me the opportunity to travel the world, meet new people and represent my country - something that I'm immensely proud of.

"It's been a wonderful experience to represent Bristol - I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here."

Rennie featured 91 times for his hometown club Edinburgh and represented his country at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Bristol director of rugby Andy Robinson added: "We're sad to see Ross's career cut short by injury because he has been an influential player for us over the past 12 months.

"Unfortunately, injuries have hampered Ross' progress, but his attitude and willingness to learn has not been dampened. He can leave the sport proud of his international achievements and with some great memories."
