Olympic women's boxing: Katie Taylor wins to secure medal

Ireland's Katie Taylor has secured an Olympic medal by beating Great Britain's Natasha Jonas in her 60kg division quarter-final in London.

County Wicklow girl Taylor enjoyed the upper hand throughout and emerged the victor by a margin of 26-15.

As the number one seed and four-time world champion Taylor was handed a bye for the first round of the initial outing for women's boxing at the Games.

Jonas had defeated Quanitta Underwood 21-13 in her first round contest.

The ExCel Arena was buzzing for the Bray girl's first appearance at the Olympics and the five-time European champion did not disappoint.

Taylor won the first round 5-2 and maintained her three-point advantage after the second round was drawn 5-5.

The Irish fighter took the third round 9-4 and the fourth 7-4 to complete a comprehensive victory.

Taylor's lightweight semi-final against Mavzuna Chorieva of Tajikistan will take place on Wednesday afternoon.
