Great Britain's Hannah Starling came agonisingly close to reaching the individual 3m springboard final, but missed out by 0.75 points.

The 17-year-old, who was making her Olympic debut, scored 313.95 to finish in 13th when a top 12 place was needed.

Team-mate Rebecca Gallantree impressed en-route to the semi-finals, but poor routines in round three and four ended her challenge.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Minxia Wu leads the standings.

"I didn't even think I'd make the semi-final yesterday," said Starling. "It's tough when it's so close, but it's my first Olympics, so I'm really happy with my performance. I just aimed to have a really good time and I did."

Gallantree, 27, says she is unsure about her future and will take some time away before making a decision on whether to continue.

"Sport can be tough sometimes," reflected Gallantree, who was 25th in Beijing. "I gave it everything I had but unfortunately it didn't go my way.

"I'm not sure [about continuing]. I'm going to take a break now. It's holiday time and then [I will] look at things for next year."
