Shooter Peter Wilson won Britain's fourth gold medal of the London Olympics with victory in the double trap competition.

The Dorset man finished two shots clear of Sweden's Hakan Dahlby. Russia's Vasily Mosin was third.

Wilson, 25, had finished the qualifying stage three shots clear and held off Dahlby's challenge to seal gold.

It is Britain's first Olympic shooting medal since Richard Faulds triumphed in the same event in Sydney 12 years ago.

Faulds failed to reach the six-man final at the Royal Artillery Barracks after finishing 12th in qualifying with a score of 133 in his fifth Olympics.

Wilson came into the event as world record holder and world number two and was the youngest man in the final.

But he admitted that he was nervous when Mosin closed to within one point halfway through the final.

"It was difficult, you are trying not to focus on that bit on your technique," he said. "I spoke in depth with my coach and we had a plan which we tried to execute as well as we could, but things are slightly out of your control when you are in that environment.

"It's been funny, my training's been erratic, I haven't been training as well as I'd hoped but I knew I would raise my game. That's what I'm here for and there's no bigger one than the Olympic Games in London, so I really hoped everything would come together on the day.

"Those hours of training for years and years really came together today and that helped me through until the end."

World number one Josh Richmond and reigning Olympic champion Walton Eller, both of the United States, failed to make the final.
