Colin Montgomerie struggling to reach Open

Colin Montgomerie is running out of routes into what would be his 22nd consecutive Open Championship after finishing last in qualifying.

The Scot hit a six-over-par total over 36 holes at Sunningdale to finish well out of contention for the 10 places at Sandwich which were up for grabs.

Montgomerie, 47, could still make it to Royal St George's with high finishes at the Scottish or French Opens.

"It's disappointing," he said. "But I will be trying everything, as usual."

Last year's Ryder Cup captain shot a one-over-par 71 on the Old Course in the first round, leaving himself needing a repeat of the stunning 62 he shot 12 months ago on the New to make it through.

But this time he shot two bogeys and two double-bogeys on the inward nine to finish on a five-over-par 74, leaving him a long way down the field of 96 players who were battling to progress.

Montgomerie, who has not missed the Open since his 1990 debut, has been struggling for form, having failed to make it into the US Open by five shots last week, then slumping to a 15-over-par total at the Welsh Open.

A top-five finish at either the French or Scottish Open would still see him make it to Sandwich next month, and there are also two spots available through a mini-money list on the European Tour which continues at this week's Italian Open.

England's Graeme Storm won the event for the second time in three years, hitting a second-round 62 to finish on 12 under par, three shots ahead of Wales Open champion Alex Noren.

But Scot Marc Warren and Spain's Ignacio Garrido were both disqualified after playing the wrong ball.

Heavy overnight rain forced a 90-minute delay at the start of the day, meaning the last groups of players did not start their second rounds until around 1630 BST, and placing was allowed on the wet fairways.

Three-time major winner and former world number one Vijay Singh pulled out of the Sunningdale qualifier over the weekend.

The Fijian, 48, who has dropped out of the , is instead playing the FedEx St Jude Classic in Memphis this week, and could still earn an Open exemption.

England's Brian Davies and Chad Campbell and Davis Love III of the United States were among those to come through US qualifying last month, but Sergio Garcia will miss out on the Open after withdrawing from that event with an infected finger.
