York City have sacked manager Russ Wilcox following Saturday's 3-1 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon.

Wilcox, who helped the League Two side avoid relegation last season, has overseen just two wins this campaign and his departure comes after a run of nine games without a victory.

Assistant boss John Schofield has also left City, who are 21st in the table.

Head of football operations and first team coach Richard Cresswell will serve as caretaker manager.

The former Sheffield United, Preston and Leeds striker, who began his playing career at York, will be assisted by youth team manager, Jonathan Greening, and goalkeeping coach, Andy Leaning.

Wilcox, 51, took over at York in October 2014 when the club were one place above the relegation zone and steered them to an 18th-place finish.

Club chairman Jason McGill described Wilcox as "an honourable, decent individual who has given his all to his role" and praised Schofield's "hard work and enthusiasm on the training ground".
