Cardiff City are opening new contract talks with Kenwyne Jones.
The 30-year-old striker has opted to sort out his future rather than travel for international duty with Trinidad and Tobago.
Jones's current deal runs out at the end of this season.
After a belated start to the Championship campaign because of injury, Jones has underlined his importance to the team with two goals in two starts.
The 6ft 2in forward joined Cardiff in January 2014 as part of a swap deal that saw Peter Odemwingie move the other way.
He was Cardiff's top scorer last season despite spending the final six weeks of the season on loan at Bournemouth, helping them win promotion to the Premier League.
This summer Jones has been linked with a switch back to Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday, one of his former clubs.
But now Cardiff have signalled their intent to stave off any interest by negotiating a new deal with the Trinidad captain.
