David McDaid's goal in the 21st minute proved enough to give Cliftonville victory over Glenavon at Mourneview Park.

McDaid forced the ball in after Jay Donnelly's shot had been punched out by home keeper Jonathan Tuffey.

Cliftonville, who have not lost an opening league game since 1998, had chances to increase their lead.

Former Partick keeper Tuffey made decent saves from Chris Curran and Martin Connelly volleys.

For Glenavon, Kevin Braniff saw a shot tipped over by new Cliftonville goalkeeper Peter Burke.

"The win could have been a bit more comfortable because we created plenty of chances," said Cliftonville manager Tommy Breslin.

"People say we do not have a natural goalscorer now, but if we keep creating the chances we have players with the ability to put them away.

"There is a determination about the players. We have only signed keeper Peter Burke but we have a good squad when everybody is fit.

"The players are up for the fight and what we need is to have our players fit and challenging for positions."
