Steve McClaren is set to be named as Newcastle United head coach next week.

The former England manager, 54, is due to formalise the move once he has returned from a family holiday.

McClaren, sacked by Derby in May, had turned down the Newcastle job on two occasions - after and for the final three fixtures of last season.

He is set to take over from John Carver, who took charge of the side after Pardew's departure.

Carver had also wanted to take the job on a permanent basis but appears to have missed out.

The 50-year-old, who guided Newcastle to Premier League safety on the final day of the season with a 2-0 win over West Ham, is expected to stay on the coaching staff at St James' Park.

Patrick Vieira was also considered as an option to become the next boss of the Magpies. However, both parties opted not to pursue a possible deal following differences over recruitment and transfer policy.
