Manager Garry Monk emphasised the importance of the Capital One Cup to Swansea City after their 3-0 victory over Everton in the third round.

Goals from Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and substitute Marvin Emnes saw the Welsh side record their first victory over the Toffees.

The Swans won the League Cup in 2013, and Monk respects the competition.

"I said to the players it's an important competition to our fans and to the club itself," said Monk.

"Everyone knows how we've done in the cup in recent history."

Monk was delighted with what he described as a professional performance against a side managed by former Swansea boss Roberto Martinez.

"I know Roberto very well and he wants to win every single game he plays in," added Monk.

"They came here with their full squad and made the changes that they did to strengthen their team.

"But we did very well. We did our changes and thankfully we're through to the next round."

Swansea's victory came after back-to-back Premier League defeats by Chelsea and Southampton.

And Monk said it was important to win ahead of Saturday's league game at Sunderland.

"The last two games we've lost, but we took a lot of positives from those games," Monk added.

"We wanted to make sure we put an end to any losing run that we had and put it right."
