Goalkeeper Brad Friedel has signed a one-year contract extension with Tottenham and will take on a new ambassadorial role.

The American, 43, was out of contract this summer, but his new deal will see him promote the club in the US.

Spurs said his commitments would "include greater involvement in our Global Coaching programme."

Friedel has over 450 Premier League appearances, but played just once in the league last season.

He joined Spurs in 2011 on a free transfer, but now finds himself as understudy to France number one Hugo Lloris.

"Brad has enjoyed an impressive 17-year career in the Premier League to date, representing Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa before joining us in the summer of 2011," the club said.

"Capped 82 times by his country, including appearing in two World Cup finals, he has currently made a total of 67 appearances in goal for us."

The north London club allowed Brazilian goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, 33, to join Watford on a free transfer on 24 May.
