Sunderland boss Gus Poyet says his side's win against Newcastle will kick-start their season.

The Black Cats beat their local rivals 2-1 to secure their first win of the season and move off the bottom of the Premier League table.

"This will change our season," said Poyet, who was also taking charge of his first home game as manager.

"I'm sure the players will be even more together and the fans will look forward to the next game."

Sunderland took an early lead through Steven Fletcher but Magpies right-back Mathieu Debuchy equalised in the second half.

Poyet brought on on-loan Liverpool striker Fabio Borini and the moved proved key as the Italian powered in a long-range strike for the winner.

Victory means the Black Cats leapfrog Crystal Palace, and Poyet said their league position meant they had to take chances to pick up wins.

"[The introduction of Borini] was a moment when we needed to take risk," said Poyet. "What a goal - the stadium nearly came down.

"For teams in our situation, when you concede a goal the players would hold for a result. We were talking in the week about not stopping.

"Conceding goals happens [but] I'm still looking for a clean sheet and from here we need to build.

"It gives us everything. We needed something. Now there is no excuses, we can go next week and win another game and continue to improve."

He added: "We have done nothing. It was nice for us and the fans but we need to keep winning games."
