Derry City are set to land a windfall of more than 拢150,000 arising from James McClean's transfer from Sunderland to Wigan Athletic.

A sell-on clause meant that the League of Ireland club would earn 15% of any transfer fee if their former player moved from the Black Cats.

Republic of Ireland winger McClean said on Twitter on Wednesday night that he had "signed with Wigan".

The transfer fee is believed to involve a fee of in excess of 拢1m.

Some reports claimed that Derry were set to land up to 拢300,000 from the deal but the League of Ireland club are maintaining that the figure is considerably smaller than that.

"Delighted to announce signed with Wigan," said McClean on

"Excited and looking forward to the net challenge ahead.

"A lot of great people at Sunderland Football Club, especially the players. A great bunch that I'll miss. Had a great time despite a few lows."

McClean's debut could be against Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

The 24-year-old moved to Sunderland from Derry City in 2011 and has scored 11 goals in 70 games for the club.

But he has fallen out of favour with manager Paolo Di Canio, who seems willing to let McClean depart.

McClean, who was part of the Republic's squad at Euro 2012 and has been capped 13 times, enjoyed an impressive first season in the Premier League under the management of Martin O'Neill, his form earning him a new three-year contract.

Although he featured in 36 of Sunderland's 38 league fixtures during the 2012-13 campaign, he struggled to build upon his early promise as the Black Cats battled against relegation.

FA Cup winners Wigan began the Championship season with a 4-0 win at Barnsley on Saturday and are strongly tipped for an immediate return to the top flight under new manager Owen Coyle.
