Jacques Maghoma: Burton Albion say contract offer pointless

Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett says it would have been pointless offering winger Jacques Maghoma a new contract and expects him to join a League One or Championship club this summer.

The 25-year-old scored 18 goals and was a key factor in the Brewers reaching the League Two play-offs this season.

But he is out of contract and has been linked with several Championship sides, including Middlesbrough.

"It's futile trying to entice him to stay," Rowett told 91热爆 Radio Derby.

"I think his future lies elsewhere so good luck to him.

"There's absolutely no point sitting down with him because his intention is to further his career and move on. He has some good options and money-wise I am sure it will be three or four times what we could offer him."

Maghoma, who was named in the League Two team of the season.

"We always felt this would be Jacques' season and that's how it turned out, " Rowett added.

"Everyone is looking for gem. He has proved he has the ability. The way Jacques plays will catch the eye. He has not been proved at the higher level but as a free transfer he will be highly sought after."

Meanwhile Alex MacDonald, who was on loan at Burton at the end this season, has been released by Burnley and the Brewers are interested in signing him on a permanent basis.
