Birmingham City: Steven Caldwell to go in St Andrew's shake-up

Birmingham City have offered new deals to five out-of-contract players, but are releasing four as part of an expected shake-up at St Andrew's.

Steven Caldwell, who is to play in the MLS for Toronto, fellow defender Pablo Ibanez, and midfielders Morgaro Gomis and Keith Fahey have all been let go.

But 34-year-old Paul Robinson has been offered a new one-year contract.

Wade Elliott, Jonathan Spector, keeper Colin Doyle and youngster Akwasi Asante have also been offered new terms.

Blues had a two-year option on 30-year-old Fahey, who was signed by former boss Alex McLeish from Irish side St Patrick's Athletic for 拢300,000 in January 2009, but following the injury that kept him out of last summer's European Championships, he made just five starts this season.

His departure, coming after last week's retirement of Stephen Carr, means that striker Nikola Zigic is the sole survivor from the club's 2011 Carling Cup-winning team.

France-born Senegal international Gomis, 27, was also effectively a McLeish signing, having been lined up just before the Scot's exit to Aston Villa in June 2011, but he never became an automatic choice under either Chris Hughton or Lee Clark, making 43 appearances for the club.

Ibanez, 31, signed by Hughton for 拢600,000 from West Bromwich Albion in September 2011, featured even more sporadically, making just 13 Championship starts, the last of them back in November.

Irish striker Adam Rooney's contract is also up this summer but, after spending the season on loan at Swindon, he is understood to have already agreed a permanent deal to stay at the County Ground.

The decision not to take up the 12-month option on 32-year-old former captain Caldwell is largely a consequence of the form of rejuvenated former West Bromwich Albion favourite Robinson.

After being released by Bolton Wanderers a year ago, the well-travelled left-back was without a club when he joined injury-hit Blues in September on an initial one-month deal.

His dressing room presence and form on the pitch, especially as a makeshift centre-half in Caldwell's place over the final two months of the campaign, has been rewarded with a 12-month deal, plus a further year's option.

Blues have offered the same to another 34-year-old, midfielder Elliott, while 27-year-olds Spector and Doyle have both been offered two-year contracts, with Asante, 20, given a one-year contract, with a year's option after finishing the season on loan at Shrewsbury.
