Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez described his team's first-ever victory over Liverpool at Anfield as a "special moment" in the club's history.

Captain Gary Caldwell scored the winner as Wigan stunned the Reds to boost their Premier League survival hopes.

"It is a historic victory and a great win for the fans," said Martinez.

"They have not had too much this season to celebrate and now they have a special moment to cherish for the rest of their lives," he told 91热爆 Sport.

Wigan came into the game deep in the mire after just one win in their previous 14 games, although draws against Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion had hinted at an improvement.

And they took the lead from the penalty spot at Anfield after Martin Skrtel was adjudged to have fouled Victor Moses.

Luis Suarez pulled Liverpool level straight after the break, but Caldwell then kept his cool to slot home after a loose ball had fallen to him inside the area.

"There was a lot of effort and togetherness on that pitch," said Martinez.

"We had a real good look about the team, kept the ball when we had to and defended well when we had to and really looked a threat going forward.

"We had to suffer at times but we limited Liverpool to very little - that is down to organistaion and hard work."

Wigan, just one point below the safety of 17th spot, now face Stoke City next weekend before successive games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

"We have lots of tough, important games but that is the nature of this competition," said Martinez.

"The Premier League is the best in world football in terms of small margins dictating results."
