Cambridge United have signed midfielder Kieran Murtagh on a two-year deal following his release from Wycombe.

After starting his career at Yeovil, the 22-year-old moved to the Chairboys last summer but spent two months on loan at Woking this season.

He told the club website: "It's a big club with a good fanbase and it's a great platform for me to help push the club back to where it belongs.

"I believe the squad has the ability to surprise a few people next season."

U's manager Jez George added: "We moved early, we knew that we wanted him and we're really pleased that we've got him before one or two others got themselves sorted out and put something to him.

"That's why I was a little bit worried when news of us speaking to him got out first, because you always want to get these things wrapped up in case someone else comes in.

"From the moment he came to the ground and we talked to him about the history of the club and the fanbase he was sold on coming here.

"You have to be realistic and it's going to be difficult to sign someone who will get us 25 goals a season.

"We have to sign players with potential but we also have to look to get goals throughout the team.

"You need players in midfield capable of scoring goals and Kieran certainly fits the bill."
