West Indies star Shivnarine Chanderpaul says his move to Derbyshire was motivated by the challenge of helping to develop the county's young talent.

Batsman Dan Redfern and all-rounders Chesney Hughes, Alex Hughes and Peter Burgoyne are just four of the youngsters tipped to play a big part for Derbyshire in the 2013 season.

"I've been hearing about Derby for a long time," said Chanderpaul.

"I'm excited to work with these guys." he told 91�ȱ� East Midlands Today.

Derbyshire's young side are back in the top flight of the Championship for the first time since 2000 - the first season of two-tier county cricket, after winning promotion as Division Two champions last season.

And Chanderpaul, 38, said the anticipation prior to the new season getting under way on Wednesday was clear.

"With the excitement from winning last year and coming up to the first league there is a buzz around the club.

"The younger guys are keen, ready to improve and that is what I was looking for.

"I love challenges. This is something that helps to motivate and keep you going.

"I remember when I got into the West Indies team with all the senior players and I learned so much from these guys.

"Hopefully the things I do, the young fellahs can see and learn from and also ask questions and I will try to help.

"Hopefully the club can move to a new level."

Meanwhile all-rounder Hughes has completed his residency and will play for Derbyshire in 2013 as an England qualified cricketer.

The 22-year-old was born in Anguilla but holds a British passport and last month signed a new contract, which keeps him at the club until September 2015.
