Alex Hales scored the second century of his career and Stuart Broad starred with the ball as Nottinghamshire had the better of day two against Somerset.

England prospect Hales scored 130 not out and shared a stand of 101 with Adam Voges (57), while Steven Mullaney made 49 as Notts closed 83 behind on 303-5.

Somerset had earlier resumed day two on 341-5 but lost their last five wickets for 45 runs as Stuart Broad took 5-95.

Craig Kieswetter added 14 to his overnight total for a career-best 164.

Watching England selector Geoff Miller will have been impresed with the performances of Kieswetter, Hales and Broad but it was the latter who did the damage in an overcast morning session.

Broad, who was dropped for England's , toiled on day one with just the reward of two wickets.

But that all changed in the space of an hour as Broad got rid of Steve Kirby, Murali Kartik and Adam Dibble.

Andre Adams (4-93) took his Championship tally to 31 wickets this season , removing Kieswetter and Peter Trego, as Somerset fell 14 runs short of maximum batting points.

Notts stumbled to 36-2 at tea as Kirby (2-65) dismissed openers Riki Wessels and Neil Edwards and when Trego got rid of Samit Patel for 13, another first-innings collapse seemed on the cards.

But Hales and Voges put on 101 in 23 overs with the Australian scoring at a rapid pace.

Voges hit 11 boundaries in his 57 off 66 balls, before becoming a first Championship wicket for debutant Adam Dibble, who had began his spell with a wide.

Mullaney and Hales then added 87 for the fifth wicket but, just when another century partnership seemed on the cards, Mullaney was caught behind by Kieswetter off Kartik one shy of a half-century.

Hales, who was dropped twice before reaching three figures with difficult chances on 59 and 68, moved to his first Championship ton of the season with a four.
