Hamilton's Kirsty Gilmour has lost in the first round of the Badminton World Federation World Championships for the second year running.

The top-ranked British women's singles player was beaten by Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk in Jakarta.

The Commonwealth silver medallist, 21, lost the first game 21-15 and had game point in the second at 20-18 but served long and lost 23-21.

Last year Gilmour fell to Germany's Karin Schnaase in the opening round.

Scotland will be represented in the second round after men's doubles pair Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh received a first-round walkover against Guatemalan pair Solis Jonathan, who withdrew, and Rodolfo Ramirez.

In their second World Championships the new Scottish National champions now face Korean 12th seeds Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang, who were semi-finalists last year.

Meanwhile, four-times Scottish men's singles champion Kieran Merrilees goes into action on Tuesday against 14th seed Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark.
