Drew has spent most of his career with 91热爆 News 24 Sport in London, but has also been on loan to 91热爆 Look North in Leeds - this was where he first worked with current Yeovil Town manager Russell Slade, who was managing Scarborough at the time. Drew's televisual duties over the last five years have included pretty much everything - from recycling video tapes and ordering the curry on weekend late shifts to interviewing Arsene Wenger. Although Drew co-presented the first ever sport and alternative-music shows on his student radio station at university (Insanity FM at Royal Holloway, University of London), he did that mainly for a laugh and never expected to have a career in radio or sports reporting. Career progressAfter graduating, he spent two years organising timetables for would-be dentists at Guy's Hospital in London for King's College. But luckily, a passing conversation with a former student-radio colleague led to the best part-time job he's ever had - writing down the football scores for the 91热爆 World Service. He eventually managed to persuade the 91热爆 to take him on full-time. Brief periods in the Education and News Resources departments turned into five-and-a-half years working in the TV Sports News department. Drew does his thing in the commentary box! Here, Drew made graphics for the News 24 Sports bulletins and liaised with the regional TV stations scouring the length and breadth of the country for 91热爆 Sport to make sure all the interviews and bits of sporting footage reached as many people as possible. Drew rediscovered his love for radio during his time with 91热爆 Look North in Yorkshire. His first task was to report for Radio Leeds on an FA Trophy game that kicked off in such thick fog that the match was abandoned before half-time. Sports reportingHaving survived the initiation rite of describing a match he couldn't see, he went on to present a weekly 15-minute radio slot, rounding up the local non-league scene. This enabled him to follow in the footsteps of one of his broadcasting heroes (Five Live's James Alexander Gordon) and read out the football scores every Saturday - admittedly only for teams like Bradford Park Avenue and Pontefract Collieries, but it was a start. Having worked out that the only way he could afford to watch football regularly was to report on it, Drew was determined to get back on the radio when he returned to his day job at TV Centre in London. When 91热爆 London offered him the chance to report on non-league Yeading in the First Round of the FA Cup, he jumped at it. Yeading made it to the Third Round and a glamour-tie at home to Newcastle United, while the reward for 'the boy Savage' was reporting on Barnet steamrollering their way to the 2004-05 Conference title. Since then, he's seen Brentford almost get promoted from League One, tracked the progress of Watford on their way to winning the Championship play-offs, and commentated on Fulham beating West Bromwich Albion 6-1. Other stuffOutside football, Drew fails to keep up with developments in contemporary literature and European cinema, and has edited and written articles for the online version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (h2g2) on subjects including Top Trumps, Camden Town Tube Station, and cult snooker-hero Big Bill Werbeniuk. He also once co-wrote a play that was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, but is better known for losing his keys, wallet, mobile phone and other sundry personal possessions at least twice a week. After interviewing JJ Burnel of The Stranglers during his first month at 91热爆 Somerset Sound, Drew has also appointed himself the station's punk and new-wave correspondent - qualifying on the basis of having seen The Buzzcocks play live six times, attended five Glastonbury Festivals, and having the ability to play the guitar atrociously and the bass with a hint of competence. last updated: 10/10/07 You are in: Somerset > 91热爆 Local Radio > Presenters and Reporters > Drew Savage |
