Formula 2 crashes into Somerset

It's fast, dangerous and crashing into the car in front is a legal move - welcome to the world of Formula 2.

About 600 drivers across Great Britain and Europe hurl themselves around a small racetrack at breakneck speeds while being bumped from the car behind all for fun.

The two litre, 180 brake horsepower cars zoom around the race track at about 50mph - which doesn't sound particularly fast but it is when you realise the track is only 380m.

The cars are developed from original 1960 Junior ten cars which were old saloon cars. For the racing, they have been modified so that the wings have been taken off and bumpers have been fitted on each end. The cars also do not have windscreens which further adds to the illusion of speed for the drivers.

The oval track is surrounded by a three foot high wall which is backed by concrete so there's no way out for the riders.听

The race has a rolling start and then it's between 20 laps of full-on racing.

"It's skill, it's determination and you're allowed in stock car racing unlike any other motorsport to push the driver in front of you if you're not fast enough," said lifelong fan Graham Bunter, the owner of Mendip Raceway which is set to hold the Formula 2 World Championships on 14 September.

"The great thing about stock car racing is that unlike any other motorsport you can stand in one spot and see the whole track."

The sport has enthralled Graham ever since the race track opened in 1969. After spending ten years racing and 20 as a race manager, Graham bought the track eight years ago.

And it's this passion which has meant the track is set to hold the championships, the second time in the track's history.
