Kids take over 91热爆 Somerset

91热爆 Somerset has lost control of the station, with students taking over. For one day only, the Big Breakfast is coming live from a school near Crewkerne, where a group of youngsters will present their own show.

The day is part of a national 'Kids Takeover' campaign which aims to get children around the country running businesses, local authorities and even schools.

Presenter Jonny Davies' diary:

Hi I鈥檓 Jonny, I鈥檓 17 and go to Wadham Sixth Form.听

Five friends and I have been set the task of creating our own radio show with the help of 91热爆 Radio Somerset, which will go live on air the morning of Wednesday 19th December.

I am keeping a diary to update the group鈥檚 progress and how we work together.听 Keep listening as there will be updates of how we are getting on and remember to tune in to listen on the morning of our show to see how we get on live across the county.

Friday 23 November

91热爆 Somerset Radio Reporter Matt Botten came in to school and discussed what the project involved.

"A fantastic experience... so far!"

We all found the idea of being on the radio really exciting and were thrown in at the deep end when Matt pulled out some equipment and asked us some questions live on air.

Sam, Adam and myself (Jonny) all got a chance to briefly speak on the Big Breakfast morning show.听 Matt then told us what we would need to do over the next few weeks to create our 30 minute live show.

We were then asked if we were still willing to take part in the project.听 This wasn鈥檛 a hard decision and all of us agreed not wanting to turn down this great opportunity. We all exchanged details so we could keep in contact with any questions.

Matt suggested, to make things run smoothly it would be a good idea to appoint a News editor and Deputy News Editor, who would oversee what we did and keep in regular contact with the station. Tom and Emma took on the roles of News editor and Deputy News Editor.听 When Matt left the six of us were excited and discussed possible roles within the show. The roles we appointed ourselves were: Presenters: Jonny Davies and Kayleigh Huxley, Travel/Deputy News Editor: Emma Wilkinson, Reporters: Adam Lamb and Samantha Reeves, News Reader/News Editor: Tom Riggs.

Later that day Tom went on air during the Somerset Drive show speaking about what the group were going to do over the following weeks and what we were looking forward to the most/least.

Monday 26 November

The group met up and spoke about some of the ideas we had for talking points. We came up with learning to drive and driving tests. I introduced the idea that Somerset could go plastic bag free and what people around the county thought of the proposal. We drew up a list of things and each member took one and researched it. We also received an email from Matt laying out exactly what we needed to have ready for the next time he came in.

Wednesday 28 November

We found a spare room in the school and asked if we could use it as an office, to keep everything that we have done so far in and also use for meetings.听 Later on that day, we had a meeting discussing our talking points further and for a bit of fun did a pretend radio improvisation which was interesting and a good laugh.

Friday 30 November

Emma found a possible expert who is trying to make Ilminster go plastic bag free. Adam and I also went into three local schools and asked what Christmas activities they were doing, e.g. nativities and dates of them, which we felt were relevant due to recent news stories about whether the nativity should still be performed in schools and the show going out around the Christmas period.

Monday 3 December

91热爆 Radio Somerset starts broadcasting on 95.5FM. Tom and I went to Ashland鈥檚; a local Primary school to talk to the head teacher about interviewing some of the children on the day of their nativity. She agreed and set a time and a date. When we get the recording equipment we will interview some of the younger children and try and get some responses to their take on the Christmas nativity story.

Wednesday 5 December

Matt came in and we showed him to our new office. He was very impressed by the research we had carried out and how prepared we were for him. We had biscuits and everything! He gave us recording equipment and mulled over some of our ideas with us thinking about possible stories we could cover and how best to get good recordings.

Read on to find out how the group got on.
