T4 on the Beach 2006

T4 returns to Weston

One the biggest summer pop festivals is returning to Weston-super-Mare this Sunday.

T4 On The Beach

North Somerset Council spent 拢45k in 2006

The show is worth 拢1.6m in TV coverage

2005's event brought around 拢3m to the local economy

Over 30,000 are expected

T4 On The Beach is returning for its third successive year.

Twenty seven acts including Girls Aloud and the Kaiser Chiefs are set to perform across two stages at this year's jam-packed show.

More than 30,000 pop fans are set descend upon the seaside town for the day- but what impact does the event have on the town?

The event cost North Somerset Council 拢45,000 to stage last year. It took over 拢18,000 in event car parking fees, made 拢2,000 from ticket sales and 拢8,000 for the event's licence fee.

It employed an external company to measure the economic impact of the 2005 event to the area.

The report found it generated 拢3m for the local economy, produced 16 full time equivalent jobs over the weekend and the destination benefited from over 拢1.6m worth of national TV coverage.

Destination manager Julia Stuckey said: "Since the 2005 event we have been approached by more major event organisers, received better TV and press coverage, and visitors to the event have returned for days out and holidays since the weekend and will continue to return and promote North Somerset as a destination to visit.

"The 2006 event received longer TV coverage and attracted almost 10,000 more attendees, indicating that the positive impact on the economy is even greater."

So does the event attract more events to the area?

Darran Mason, the events operations manager for the council, said the impact was difficult to gage.

"The 2006 event received longer TV coverage and attracted almost 10,000 more attendees, indicating that the positive impact on the economy is even grea"

Julia Stuckley

"We have found that having T4 for the past couple of years has highlighted the areas potential in hosting these types of events and also help promote the area/authority as a location keen to bring in new and expand or maintain existing events.

"Before T4 arrived we already had an established events calendar. For example we already have the Motorcycle Beach Race, Weston Carnival, Weston-super-Helidays, Weston Sandocross, Tough Ten Challenge, Xmas Cracker Road Race, Race for Life etc. We also facilitate over 200 minor events/ fundraisers during the year."

David added they had received enquiries about a national scout jamboree, a classic car rally a motocross event for 2007.听

With this year's event being even bigger with two stages and an extra 10,000 people, it looks like the town will reap further benefits.

For many hoteliers, T4 is the busiest weekend of the year as all of the hotels are full.

Hannah Jefferey, reservation manager for the Royal Pier Hotel, said she had been taking over 20 phone calls a day for the last two weeks while manager at the Richmond Hotel, Jonathon Hill, said he has had to turn a lot of people away.

So what about local resources? Dan Mountain from Avon and Somerset Police said they have drafted in extra officers to cope with the surge in people.

He said this did not mean other areas of the county would suffer as the force has the resilience to police this kind of event.

So who's actually performing at this year's event?
