Weston sand sculptures: have your say

Four new sand sculptures have been created on Weston-super-Mare's Beach Lawns at a cost of 拢35,000.

The sculptures are based on fairy tales and feature works showing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Hansel and Gretel.

Last year, when there was only one sculpture depicting King Kong, it cost 拢11,000.

The bill is being paid by North Somerset Council and the event is sponsored by five separate companies.

The rise in cost accounts for not only the extra artists' flights and accommodation, but also for night-time security which is needed as last year King Kong was destroyed by vandals.

The council hope the sculptures will attract more people to the area and said it provides the town with more cultural activities.

But do you think it is value for money?

I work for the Destination Management Team at North Somerset Council that arranged the sand sculpture event. I would just like to say that not a penny of tax payers money has been spent on this event, all the costs have been covered by the generous sponsorship and support from local businesses; Wookey Hole, The Grand Pier, Birse, SAS (Bristol LTD) fencing, Towens, Wickes, Brandon Hire, Daunceys Hotel and the Fire Brigade.

Having worked for North Somerset Councils chosen Council Tax administrator until recently, I believe that this waste of public funds is just the sort of thing local residents have the right to complain about! Why can't the Local Authority use this money in other areas to improve the town on a more permanent basis, therefore creating a sustainable income for these sorts of events??

night time security? I walked past it the other night with friends and all i saw was a fence. In fact the fence was so low a 5 year old could throw a stone over and wreck the 拢35,000 waste of money. The council are fools

chris
we are obviously paying too much council tax! i think we can do without the sand castles and then we can all have a drop in tax. what a complete waste of money

Hannah

Flights, accommodation, security come on !!!, how much more council tax payers money can these idiots at the council spend on useless things.I am certain local artist and people could have do an equally good show for a fraction of the cost, how can they say the bill is being paid for by the council when in fact its ratepayers money no one asked me if I wanted my rates money to be spent this way.

I'm a veteran sand sculpture and could easily do a similar example of one of these works in a day or so. 35k for 4 is simply insane, I nearly choked on my sandwich when I read what was paid! Have I read it right??!! Someone is laughing all the way to the bank! May I suggest to the council about getting some of the many local artists in to work next year, it would mean more coming from local people, promote art in the area and the council would be 35k better off! What a needless waste of an extortionate amount of money, I still can't quite believe exhibiting four sand carvings cost 35k! Unbelievable.
