James Purefoy
James in the series about Ancient Rome

Interview exclusive: James Purefoy on Rome

By Helen Otter
In his first UK interview about the second series of the big-budget 91热爆/HBO drama, the dashing and charming (!) Taunton-born actor talks about reprising his role as the flamboyant Mark Antony.

With the bloody finale of the first series culminating in Caesar's death, Series Two picks up the story only moments later.

"It's really about power this series,"听James told 91热爆 Somerset's Helen Otter.

James as Mark Antony - ready for battle

"It's about the struggle between Mark Antony and Octavian (who becomes Augustus Caesar), the tussles, and the toing and froing, that come with all of that."

The star of Vanity Fair and A Knight's Tale reprises his role as the Roman politician and general - "a larger-than-life character who lived his life at 1,000 miles an hour".

"The whole job was enormous fun to do - Mark Antony was great to play.

"He is very fertile ground for an actor. He really didn't understand the meaning of the word 'brake' and had his foot on the gas right up until he died."

So what else can we expect from the new series? Will it be as bloody and gory as the first?

"Ancient Rome was a violent place," said James, who has most recently played the title roles in the 91热爆's Beau Brummell: This Charming Man and Blackbeard.

"We wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't mirror that in some way.

"There is a big battle where there are a great many soldiers and horses and death and destruction - it's good, it's really good."

And what of 'that naked scene' - with which, no doubt, James' army of female fans are all too familiar!? Will it be repeated in Series Two?

"You'll just have to watch and see," said James.
