Who are Fatty Boom Basstic? Laura James does the lead vocals; JD strums guitar and sings some backing vocals; Pete G slaps the bass; and Mcfly is our hit man on the drums - and on anything else he can hit. Where in Somerset are you from? Bath When did you form? May 2006 How did you get together? JD was bored stupid of playing in cover bands and Laura has loads of cool poetry.
So just finding a melody and a few chords bridged the gap to start the songwriting. How would you describe your music? Somewhere in between funk and pop. It's quite mainstream music, but we have a definite funky edge around everything we play. How did the band gets its name? Playing around with the phrase 'fatty boom boom'. It was something we used to say at school, not really knowing what it meant - but it always makes us smile. We think it's just slang for a big girl - eg 'she got a whole lotta fatty boom boom there.' Who are your musical influences?
Laura is a jazz-diva deep down - she likes people such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. Then there's the funk, disco stuff - Nikka Costa would be a good one. Jd likes a mix of rock guitarists like Slash, Nuno Bettencourt and the likes of John Frusciante. Then a few jazzers like Joe Pass, Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. Lately, he's been listening to Snoop Doggy Dog though. Pete's favourite snack is a packet of cooked meat (preferably hand-carved) - his favourite noble gas is boron. Mcfly likes the drummer out of the Lenny Kravitz band - Cindy Blackman, and also Ralph Salmins, Ian Thomas, Drumbassadors, Stanton Moore, Benny Greb, Billy Ward, Steve Gadd, Philly Joe Jones, Pete Riley, JoJo Mayer, Bob Armstrong, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Jon Hiseman, Craig Blundell, The Jungle Drummer, Dave Garibaldi, Peter Erskine, Chad Smith etc. What is your most memorable gig so far? We played at our friend's birthday gig where there were seven live bands.
JD dressed up as a Native American - it wasn't a fancy dress party, so needless to say we stood out from the crowd. Where would you most like to play? An all-expenses-paid trip around Australia, maybe stopping at a few Pacific islands on the way back. Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself Just like The Vengaboys, we like to party. |
