Sue Merchant, from Drayton, came first out of almost 800 international entries with her song Fool. "I'm naturally thrilled that I won," said Sue. "Unfortunately, I don't have family anymore but friends and music colleagues alike were very pleased for me." The UK Songwriting Contest is run annually by the BRIT Trust and the Music Aid Foundation, The Guild of International Songwriters and Composers, and the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. Talking about the inspiration for her award-winning song, Sue said: "It's about the suffering of so many women out there at the hands of abusive husbands and partners. "I have witnessed a few such situations in the lives of women I've known personally over many years, and I simply wanted to pay tribute to them." Sue is now hoping that her song will reach a much wider audience in the UK as a result of the award.
