Voodoo Moon

Meet Voodoo Moon from Taunton, and find out how the legendary Joe Strummer became a fan of the band.

Who are Voodoo Moon?

Ade Miles on vocals; Paul Wright on guitar and backing vocals; Simon Brierly on drums; and Martin Selwood on bass guitar, keyboards and backing vocals.

Where in Somerset are you from?

Taunton

When did you form?

1999

How did you get together?

Voodoo Moon

Ade and Paul got together originally to write and play some songs - it just developed from there.

Simon came on board after trying out a few different drummers. Having previously been in a black-metal band, he was just what the band needed to bring the songs to life.

Martin had been the band's sound engineer for a couple of years, and had previously been in a band with Ade.

When the band's former bass-player departed, Martin, having recorded and produced the band's album, stepped in.Ìý

How would you describe your music?

Melodic rock, with a hard core.

It has so many elements in there, from classic rock to ambient, blues, acoustic, industrial and thrash metal - it is hard to describe.

How did the band gets its name?

The band originally started life as Nightshade.

When the album was nearly finished, a US band with the same name released their album so we felt the need to change.

Voodoo Moon was the one that seemed to leap out as the obvious choice.

Who are your musical influences?

Everyone in the band brings something different:

Voodoo Moon
  • For guitarist Paul, it would be Dokken, Iron Maiden, Dream Theatre and Led Zeppelin
  • Singer Ade would be Motley Crue, Megadeth, Skid Row, Brides of Destruction, Guns N' Roses
  • Simon brings in the harder and heavier influences, such as Slayer,Ìý Metallica, Creed and loads of really obscure black-metal bands
  • Martin probably has the oddest influences in the band, ranging from The Prodigy, Motown, 70s disco, The Cure, Rush, Jean-Michel Jarre, Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails, The Beach Boys and Peter Gabriel

What is your most memorable gig so far?

Probably our recent gig at The Ritz Social Club in Burnham-on-Sea. We got everyone singing along to the chorus of Hell or High Water - that was great.

A close second has to be Ade's monitor-surfing incident at the Pittball Festival recently. The monitor fell off stage when Ade stood on top of it - luckily he jumped off just in time.

Where would you most like to play?

The festival circuit in Europe, Glastonbury, Wacken in Germany and the Download Festival.

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

  • Paul was formerly a professional musician, along with his brother, playing drums in a band called Felony who were signed to Polydor Records
  • Martin has previously played on three Radio 1 roadshows, and has opened up for Kim Wilde, OMD, Ace of Bass, East 17, Rick Astley and Bjorn Again. His previous band was a costume band, playing 70s disco and funk, complete with big hair and even bigger flares!
  • A few months before he tragically passed away, the legendary Joe Strummer just happened to see the band play at Rockers Live in Taunton - he came up and said he loved it
