Papa Shango

Papa Shango from Street combine funky bass lines and guitar riffs, with a hard-hitting rock crunch and plenty of guitar solos. Listen to a couple of their tracks.

Who are Papa Shango?

Luke Di Notaro on vocals and bass; Gavin Morrison on guitar and backing vocals; Tom Stainer on lead guitar; and Billy Reddin on drums

Where in Somerset are you from?

Luke from Papa Shango

Street

When did you form?

2004/5

How did you get together?

The band was created following the breakup of two other bands, which each member of Papa Shango was originally involved with.

Luke and Tom were playing in another rock band called The Hej Munkees, whilst Gavin and Billy were in a punk band called Kakofiny.

As Luke, Tom and Gavin were currently studying GCSE music together at the time, we decided to collaborate - it all started from there.ÌýÌýÌýÌý

How would you describe your music?

Gavin from Papa Shango

We're heavily influenced by '70s rockers Thin Lizzy and the very early funk material by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

We like to think of our material as a combination of the two, combining some funky bass lines and guitar riffs, with a hard-hitting rock crunch and plenty of guitar solos.

How did the band gets its name?

The band got its name from an '80s American wrestler.

When we were deciding on a name, everyone was stuck for ideas so we thought we would search random words (like papa) on the internet.

Papa Shango was the result of our findings.

Who are your musical influences?

Thin Lizzy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gary Moore, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen

What is your most memorable gig so far?

Our most memorable gig would probably be when we played to a packed-out Strode Theatre - there was an audience of about 500 people there.

Where would you most like to play?

I suppose we're like the proverbial sheep, as we'd love to play the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

Although, we wouldn't mind playing anywhere where people love the music and there's a great atmosphere.

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

Although the four of us are a group, we couldn't be more different from each other:

  • Luke is a huge Kiss/Michael Jackson fan!
  • Gavin loves any ska music, and Santana
  • Tom's into technical guitar wizards, likeÌýJoe Satriani
  • Billy is a huge Joey Jordison (Slipknot) fan
