Somerset Sounds - Artists

Syphon
Syphon

Syphon

Bridgwater's Syphon are classed as a hardcore/screamo band. But if you like them, that's cool. And if you don't, that's cool too!

Who are Syphon?

Carl Florey on vocals, Keith Davies on guitars, Justin Mirto on bass, and Chris Baker on drums.

Where in Somerset are you from?

Bridgwater

When did you form?

Syphon

Mid 2002

How did you get together?

Keith and Chris knew each other from our school days. Chris was always drumming for local bands, and Keith would go and watch him perform.

One day, Keith decided to approach Chris to ask him if he'd like to form a different metal band. After a long wait, Chris made the decision to leave his band at the time and form a new one with Keith.

We practised on our own for a while, until we were ready to look for other band members.

Carl came to be our vocalist, due to his old band splitting up. We naturally took the advantage and asked him to join Syphon. We're pleased he said yes!

We went without a singer and a bass player for well over a year - our original singer let us down a lot, and we needed someone to be more committed to the band!

Most of 2002, and pretty much half of 2003, were spent with an on and off singer, and without a full-time bass player!

Carl joined Syphon in late 2004. Justin, our bass player, joined in mid 2005.

We've had many setbacks, but have managed to come through all of them. The lineup you see of Syphon today has been together since mid 2005.ÌýÌýÌý

How would you describe your music?

Most people class us as a hardcore/screamo band!

We feel that there's too many labels on music today. If you like us, that's cool. If you don't, that's cool too!

We have our own twisted edge, and we feel that you get to see that if you catch us playing live!

How did the band gets its name?

We went through a load of different names in the beginning, and the name Syphon isn't relevant to anyone or anything!

We wanted a name that was short, sharp and wasn't a tongue twister for people to say!

We settled with Syphon.

Who are your musical influences?

There are many, many different musical influences within Syphon.

Each band member has a slightly different outlook on what we like and dislike. But when you put these influences together, you get what Syphon is all about!

Examples of influences are (in no particular order) Machine Head, Sepultura, Silverchair, Muse, Pantera, Norma Jean, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Will Haven. There are many more that we could list!

What is your most memorable gig so far?

Our most memorable gig(s) so far would have to be when we recently played in the Silhouettes bar in our home town.

Syphon

We were the last band to ever play in there because the venue was closing down. It was packed with kids all going nuts. They were falling all over the stage, and generally going mad!

We think the kids got overly excited, due to the fact the venue was closing down! You could say that the gig closed the venue good and proper!ÌýÌýÌý

Where would you most like to play?

We'd like to play anywhere that would have us, but if we had a choice of famous venues, we'd like to play in the following places:

  • London Astoria
  • Any of the Barfly Clubs around England
  • Carling Academy (any of them)
  • Donnington Park
  • Glastonbury Festival
  • Ozz Fest

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

On Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 August 2006, we'll be playing two shows in Massachusetts, USA.

We got to the semifinal of the Emergenza 2005 band competition.

One last interesting fact would be, we ain't got a record deal and we'd love to be signed by someone. If anyone is interested, we'd like to hear from you!

SYPHON were kind enough to let a good friend of mine and I sit in on a practice once!! I live in New York and only had one week in England, and it was one week they had no proper gigs, so they let us sit and listen to the practice! It was one of the best experiences of my life! They're not only great musicians with an amazing sound, but they're wonderful people besides! They're quickly becoming my favorite band, and I'd love nothing more than to see them go all the way!!!

Mert
A pretty awesome band all round I must say :P Good luck with the US gigs!
