The Wurzels: Somerset legends

Drink up thy cider, and listen to an interview with one of the members of the band synonymous with Somerset.

Chris Ellis

The Wurzels have to be one of Somerset's biggest exports, and interest in the legendary band spans the generations.

"We got the idea for Combine Harvester from a track we heard in Ireland and then we Wurzelised it!"
Tommy Banner

Originally the band was named Adge Cutler and the Wurzels after its founding member.

After Adge was tragically killed in a car crash on 5 May 1974, Tommy Banner, Tony Baylis and Pete Budd decided to carry on as The Wurzels.

They're still going strong some three decades later!

There can't be a person in Somerset who hasn't smiled at the line: "I've got a brand new combine harvester and I'll give you the key!"

Being from the cider-making county myself, I just had to interview these Somerset legends!

I managed to secure an interview with their accordion player and pianist, Tommy Banner, who lives here in Taunton:

Absolutely FANTASTIC - :) !
From Gerrans, In Cornwall: Had the pleasure of seeing them yesterday in Tregony and Without a doubt it was one of the most fun gigs I have attended in a very long time - :) !My husband has been a follower and fan since the 60's but my being from Canada I was only aware of them because of what my husband told me over the years and by playing their songs ! May they be around many many more years

I moved from Somerset up to London in September to go to univerisity. Few people seem to know where Somerset is, but as soon as you say Wurzels, they know what you're on about!

John Westwood
The Wurzels are r.e.a.l.... so much of the rubbish presented as popular/folk music is trite, and not representative of the area that it purports to represent. Sadly Adge. who started it all, is no longer here to boot it along, but Tommy and the rest are doing a great job. Keep it up! See ya under the Wurzel tree! John - now in sunny Spain

alex

Love the Wurzels, being a displaced Somerset boy in the Caribbean I often listen to them to remind me of dear old Somerset. Best concert I ever saw (and that includes a few Piltons) was the Wurzels in a Marquee young Farmers event last year in Wedmore, Fantastic!!!

Cider jim
pride of the west country

Love the Wurzels, the best ever line was " I am off to Barrow Gurney for to see me Sister Ern," or something like that. They did a lot for charity.

Coming from somerset myself, I think the Wurzels are great and they make I smile! :-) We also use Wurzel songs at Bristol Rovers matches, but it seems to be dying out a bit. shame.

What a bunch of absolute legends

Robert Herniman
I'm a fan of the Wurzels, I knew the chorus to Drink up thy Zider from supporting Yeovil and I knew the chorus of Combine Harvester, my dad knew a few songs and basically it started from there. They are a credit to the county.
