Burnham-on-Sea webcam

Webcam shows off Burnham-on-Sea seafront

A community-run webcam is showing off the sun, sea and sand on the esplanade at the Somerset seaside-resort.

The webcam is the centrepiece of Burnham-on-Sea.com - a website set up in 2002 that is designed, written and run by local residents.

The site is also home to the web presence of the town's lifeboats, hovercraft and Coastguard.

Watch the world go by

You can view live images updated around the clock of Burnham seafront and beach.

"It amazes me that the webcam is regularly used by people as far away as New York and Australia."
Mark Newman

You will also see the Pier Pavilion, which lays claim to the title of being the shortest seaside pier in Britain.

At night, you can view illuminations on the pier and the length of the esplanade.

Website manager Mark Newman says the webcam has been proving very popular with lots of different sorts of people.

"Walkers are able to check the conditions before taking a stroll along the seafront, and motorists can check the state of traffic during the busy summer months.

"Anglers can look at the weather before starting fishing, and jet-skiers can check how rough the sea is before setting off from home.

"Lots of people are just intrigued to see what's going on along the town's seafront."

The tide is high

Launched early in 2005, the webcam regularly attracts several thousand visitors a week.

"It's used not only by people in Burnham, but also many former residents around the world.

"It amazes me that the webcam is regularly used by people as far away as New York and Australia.

"They've e-mailed us to say how wonderful it is to see how Burnham's seafront hasn't changed!

"I think the facility is a superb promotional tool for Burnham."

We were over on holiday from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta and staying in Burnham with my sister as we celebrated our mother's 90th birthday. We walked along the sea front to go to supper wt Witherspoons and saw the camera in the window. Other people were looking for it too. It really is great for keeping in touch with family back in the old country. Thank you.
